Let's celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. day! As we do every year here on the IdilVice blog. But now we have an African American president. When Barack Obama was elected in November 2008 and then sworn in in January 2009, many have seen it as MLK's dream finally coming true and in a way it was.

I remember the feeling of joy, sheer disbelieve and tears of happiness of so many that election day. I was up in Harlem that day and I won't forget it. There is much work left to be done however. Still a long road ahead.

“As we commemorate the 40th anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s assassination, it’s time for an honest assessment of just how far we’ve come to achieve his dream of freedom and justice for all."

"A quick snapshot of today’s income inequality and continued health and educational disparities suggests that we haven’t come far enough."

“Economic disparities alone are higher today than it’s been in this country since 1928. Today’s minimum wage is just $5.85 an hour, which buys significantly less than the minimum wage of King’s time."

"Health disparities are also grim. More than one in five African Americans are uninsured and they have the highest rates of death due to diabetes, heart disease, and breast, lung, and colon cancer than any other ethnic group. And perhaps most sobering—segregation and inequality continue to define our public school system. Most recently we learned that in 17 of the nation’s 50 largest cities, less than half of the students who entered high school in 2003 graduated."

Last week I went to see & hear Barack Obama at a rally in Jersey City. More than 6000 people attended and the line outside the University was way long. I signed up to volunteer and once I was back home I designed a T-shirt. I will also have a skirt of the same design in the near future (you know me!), which will be sold in my online shops.

Undoubtedly I can make money with Barack, but the fact that Barack Obama, a politician, has become some sort of an icon, or pop culture object (yesterdays democratic debate looked like the MTV Music awards!) is more thrilling to me than the momentary sellability of the subject Obama. He indeed stands for much more than that and therefore I love to - and must - include him in my collection of icons, along side Ghandi, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., The Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, The Ramones, AC/DC, Grateful Dead, etc. because he deserves respect and props for a long time to come! Obama definitely rocks!

So, just so you know, he will have a permanent spot in my collection of Tribute pieces, no matter what.

Most importantly: A America worth living in is up to you! So please go vote on February 5th, 2008
