a look back to summer 2010

Yes that's right although we still have high temperatures of 90 degrees, we all know that Summer is on it's way out, sooner rather than later... I don't know about you, but I really, sincerely enjoyed Summer 2010! It was warm and beautiful and it smelled so good! The many weekends at the beach, my birthday, swimming, biking, my summer wardrobe... I really loved it, maybe more than ever... I had a clear vision of style and it was easy... I can't think about not being able to wear my eggshell colored converse high top sneakers and my vanilla cotton shirt and it's gonna be hard to store my gradient printed sheer cotton pants and my wide rimmed sun hat... not to mention my red Woodstock Tunic Dress, which I wore over cropped pink tights with my silver Sketcher Tone-Ups (they might actually have caused my knee and ankle to be a bit sore, so don't wear them for extended periods of time, O.K.? They however sure add a nice bit of height for a flip flop!) I'll miss my soft pink shorts (I will look forward to wearing the matching sports blazer though, I never wore it because it was simply too warm) I will try to sneak my wooden bangles past labor day.
I'll be glad to skip sun lotion and mosquito spray, but I will miss my easy breezy summer style! Of course I am also looking ahead to Fall and Winter... I have so many new designs and I guess all I have to do is get into the mood and I am sure that will happen as soon as the temperatures drop... it'll be all good... but for now, I'll still enjoy to the fullest every day over 70 degrees and up!

being a step ahead by taking a step back

For a fashion designer it is already 2011. Yes it can be weird to work on designs to be worn in a year from now. You're always hushed to the next thing before you can really enjoy that moment. As an independent I can control the design schedule a bit more, but let's be honest, you've got to think ahead and sometimes that means to just really be in the now. Because people who do not worry about fashion (they could be your customer), they have to catch up first.



As much as it is shameful to be catching up on an ongoing trend, it can be frustrating to be ahead all the time. And sometimes I just wanna make a piece of clothing for right now! That could mean I've got to take a step back. "What is she talking about? It's confusing!" you may say. So let me show you a situation like this on an example.

I am rediscovering a print from 2 years ago. It feels right to me now.

It just happened yesterday when I was on my usual sneak peek tour through the garment district. Those of you who have been following some of my work, know about the cool Sunglasses photo printed fabric. Well, when I chose it for a dress 2 years ago, there was another print from the same manufacturer, the Sandals photo print. I preferred the Sunglasses one over the Sandals one then and never looked back, but on my stroll yesterday this print looked like now to me, I wanted to make something with it to wear this Summer 2010. And that is what I mean when I say: "Sometimes I have to take a step back to be ahead", which could be what I am feeling right now.

It's intuition I believe. Anyway, now that I have picked the fabric, I've got to get inspired to come up with the type of garment it is going to be and that - you bet - is a whole another story! It may inspire you or you may have a suggestion... please feel free to comment on it :)

happy new millennium

A Happy New Year 2010 everybody! I like how 2010 looks. And feels so far. The numbers looks so futuristic.

I think we are indeed finally transitioning into the New Millennium. Foods are getting healthier (ever seen a Pepperidge Farm loaf without artificial color, flavors and preservatives and no high fructose corn syrup, lots of fiber and lower sodium, spiced with natural sea salt?) This is 2010 ladies and gentlemen and we don't take s***t anymore. Companies are quickly turning things around and cater to the new found consciousness.

It also seems like we are at least trying to cut emissions and save the globes trouble with warming. Affordable health care may be soon available for everybody in America... but we are all still trying to understand exactly what else is happening and changing and where it's all heading. For what it's worth, even I am struggling to find my way. But there, I do see a light at the end of the tunnel!

I see how we are going to find our way through all the commotion, uncertainty, hardship and of course the billions of tweets and comments and email messages and we'll even soon be a able to navigate prominently and confidently that ever changing world, the internet. It's here to stay and we better figure out how it all works and what it offers and how we can make a use of it. Now.

So I am happy to say: Welcome to the New Millennium and Happy New Millennium to you!

I know the G stands for G-spot, the official name of the lingerie ridden Spring collection of master Jean Paul Gaultier (Yes, I have interned there). But I interpret it as O.G., Original Gangster, because that's what he really is, in fashion, it's understood. Yes, he's the best.



Looking at his current collection which just passed over the runway in Paris, there are so many of his previously used details and ideas, even dating back to the Madonna collaborations which turned out the pointy bras, but everything is a heck of lot more subtle! My man!

I need them tights. With sheer and opaque graphic blocks and stripes! Plus, gimme that sexy denim overall! Stunning! Much more inventive than Ralph Lauren's dusty old barn versions, which carry absolutely no original, exiting new detail whatsoever.

Those denim skirts are essential too - finally - a long skirt you can walk in! The corset denim jacket is equally a Must-Have.

sick of fashion?

Yes mam, you can imagine it happens that fashion designers have it up to here (over the head) with fashion. Now is Milan Fashion Week and before it was London Fashion Week, Paris Fashion Week has not even started. I am just glad New York Fashion Week was first! I was all energetic for it starting out. Saw a great many shows, including my own and mingled at the best parties in town. Lots of inspiration at the end of a season to go right back to the drawing table and start designing Fall 2010!

Over the course of the last 3 weeks I have become a little numb to the fashion news, sorry to say. That feeling will last for a day or two, then I usually snap right back into it! It's that one bad day per year we're all too familiar with. The quick fall after the long high. Melancholy maybe. But holy cow and thanks goodness: My customers don't wait, they want more designs, new designs, freakin' every day! And I love it. I do. I LOVE what I do. I have a dream job.

I guess I just don't understand why everybody has to come up with new collections at the exact same time, thrown at you all in a span of a mere 3 weeks!? It's commerce. I got it. The season clearly calls for us to buy new clothes now, the ones from last season are no longer fashionable.
You know I don't believe in this. I always wear my old classics, that is what personal style is about. It's about not letting anyone dictate what you wear at what time. You decide.

Oh, let me be grateful to you, for just hanging in there with me, while I freely dispose into cyber space what's on my mind, all these scattered thoughts which may or may not make much sense.... Thanks for just going through this little personal evaluation with me!

Anyway - so no - of course we are NOT sick of fashion just yet and I am confident once the last show goes over the runway and the curtains finally close, the lights are turned off, life goes on. We will come up with our own styles and we might buy a new dress or a coat. It's all up to us.

To my customers: Thanks! I adore my customers. Some of them send me pictures of themselves wearing the clothes they bought, sometimes they look great, sometimes not so great, but it's all good. Sometimes they look just stunning!

fashion week monday

Since the start of Fashion Week last week I have been running around the city constantly, in heels I might add. Like everybody else I kicked off NYFW with "Fashion Night Out", which I thought was really awesome!

I was chatting with Humberto Leon and Erin Wasson at Opening Ceremony, Selima and Larry at Selima Optique and Derek Lam at Derek Lam. Never in my life have I had that much champagne! Free! Vivienne Tam is now following me on Twitter after I twittered about her generous sale that night. Lots and lots of pictures were taken and I will post them as they are being downloaded, once I get a break here!

Yesterday I showed my Spring 2010 Collection to buyers and press at the Tribeca showroom on Franklin Street. We had a blast! Pictures will follow in the next few weeks...

As a fashion designer AND a fashion blogger is is important to me to cover both of the subjects this week, so tonight, I am very thrilled to go to the Dress Up Soiree an event created around independent fashion blogging, which includes a panel discussion about the world of online fashion and where it’s heading. Followed by a party.


There will be today’s most interesting and stylish authorities in online fashion. Susie Bubble is just one of them.

what I am wearing right now

You probably guessed that I would not give in to the rule to ditch white after Labor Day. It's fine, I'm not mad at you. Of course I wear it. I actually get a kick out of doing it. Yeap, there's some rebellion left in me honey, if that's what you call such an action. These are my new shoes, right in time for LD ;-)





And I wear these kicks with my Mr. Spock Pencil Peplum Skirt and some black tights:

This 80's style, high waisted skirt has a long sexy slit in the back, but don't get fooled, it is dangerously comfortable, being made from a soft all cotton French terry sweatshirt fabric!

There are the ones hat have that special something. One either has it or they don't. Carey Mulligan is one of those who have it. Having been awarded the Shooting Star Award at the Berlinale 2009, there is no doubt that you will hear more about and see this 24 year old Londoner actress - sooner or later - in an upcoming movie or two.


I mentioned before that every season there is someone that inspires my collections. Someone I'd see in the garments I am working on, besides my own self of course. So the minute I spotted this face I was smitten: Here is someone who is super cute, with a not so perfect smile, a chameleon (well, make up helps), seemingly sensitive and innocently sexy - perfect!

It's the time again where I am trying to get into the mood for Spring Summer 2010. I first let myself inspire by forecasts, especially in terms of colors, it gives me a lot of ideas... check it out!


Amped Up
Neon intensified and amplified. Amped Up.
Lime green and bright yellow shades of strobe light and wacky fanatic exude funkiness on a palette of vinyl and metallic spandex. Unconventional and bizarre metal eyelets and dog leash fasteners evoke a notion of fearlessness. Luminous orange and hot pink tones of precocious and gaudy ignite bubbly, plastic backdrops of slinky knit and cotton jersey. Extreme in degree. Amped Up.


Free Style
Liberated and unrestrained style. Free Style.
Orchid and deep pink shades of emancipation and uninhibited harmonize fluid movements of silk habotai and organza. Pinkish violet and light sea green hues of sovereignty and triumphant exuberance give an alluring depth to wisps of taffeta and charmante. Poignant, raw edges exude liberty and inner serenity. Style transcending boundaries of the mind. Free Style.


Touch Of Blush
A perfect touch for the femme fatale. Touch Of Blush.
Yellow gold and light pink shades of glow and flushed cheeks evoke a notion of virtue and temptation on a backdrop of Duchesse Satin. Deep rose mingles with gold-flecked ribbon, accentuating delicate, fluttering nuances. Mauve and fuchsia tones of deep love and modesty inspire extreme femininity on gabardine and tulle. A feminine touch. Touch Of Blush


Tropical Twist
Sultry vibrations with a twist. Tropical Twist. Vibrant turquoise and green shades of cool breezes and lush terrain create a parallel balance in a backdrop of ethereal views. Coral and pink tones of irradiant flamingo and plumeria reveal subtle stitching and precise edges on plain weave poplin. Purple hues of opium coil indicate an unrestrained peculiarity on flat-felled seams. A twist below the equator. Tropical Twist.
